Return

I’ve created a forest area of the same size to the south of my current base.
Now, I’m feeling idle again, so I plan to make a large amount of dried fish today.
I’m worried about having nothing to do and getting scolded by Nomos for bothering him.

I’ve filleted a large amount of fish and soaked them in seawater for an hour and a half.
This should give them a perfect salty taste.
At least, I hope so.

While the fish are marinating, I watered the crops with Tile and checked the soil’s condition with Nomos.
He said it was fine and that the microbes were gradually increasing.
Since I had already mixed a large amount of crushed small fish and seaweed beforehand, the soil was closer to its normal state now.
However, Nomos told me to make the same fertilizer again when I put soil in the forest area.

Well, I’ll have to wait until Bell and Rain can help me catch small fish.
If the plant seeds arrive, greenery might sprout in this barren land.
I’m looking forward to it.
I want to eat some fresh vegetables.

An hour and a half has passed since I soaked the fish in seawater.
I moved them to a drying rack and laid them out.
If these dried fish are tasty, maybe next time, I’ll ask Bell and Rain to catch octopus or squid, and I’ll process them too.

If I had healing magic, I could try eating raw fish, but I guess that’s impossible without making a contract with the spirit of life.
It’s too difficult in this barren land.

If a forest is created, the trees and grass should have life, so maybe it’ll be okay? But it would be quite challenging to have animals.
It’s unlikely that wild animals will come on their own through this barren land, even if the forest is created.

I spent time doing various things like making small items, cooling off in the pool, and talking with Dyne, Nomos, and Tile.
The day when Bell and Rain were supposed to return had arrived.

By the way, Dyne was insisting on how much she embodied the qualities of an older sister, including dignity and kindness.
I have no idea why she’s so fixated on the position of being an older sister.

I felt restless and passed the time doing small tasks, but since I had finished everything, time seemed to pass slowly.

“Yuta, if you have nothing to do, why don’t you increase the waterways?”

“Increase the waterways? I don’t mind if you want to increase them, but where do you want to draw them?”

We already have a waterway to the pool, stored drinking water, and for the toilet, we just dug a hole and covered it with sawdust.
There’s no need to draw more water.

“I want you to build a waterway to the forest space.
We need water in the forest, right? Also, a spring in the forest is so beautiful.”

I see.
It seems like there’s plenty of water, so it shouldn’t be a problem.
In the barren land where it doesn’t rain even if we plant trees in the forest, the trees will die without water.

If there’s a spring, it’ll be easier to water and some water will leak out of the waterway’s junctions.
It might also help prevent the ground from drying up.
It’s not a bad idea.

“Okay, I got it.
We’ll make the waterway after putting soil in the forest area, but I’ll make the spring now.
It’ll be in the middle of the forest, so it should be about the size of the pool, right?”

“Yuta, thank you.
I’ll be happy if it’s rounder,” said Dyne.

“Round? Why? It’s just harder to process,” I said.

“That may be true, but imagine it, Yuta.
Imagine walking in the forest and finding a spring.
What shape would it be?”

It feels like a quiz.
No, it’s more like a personality test.

“Oh, I see.
I imagined a round shape more than a square, but what’s the meaning of it?” I asked.

“There’s no meaning to it.
But I think the image is important,” she replied.

I want to hit her.
I really want to hit her.
But Dyne is here with good intentions.
I’m the one who’s being helped, and she’s the one who’s helping me…ah my stomach hurts.

“Uh, I understand.
But it’s impossible to make a perfect circle,” I said.

“It’s enough.
Thank you, Yuta,” she replied.

Dyne comes over and strokes my head, and while it calms me down a bit, I feel humiliated.
Dyne can be reliable at times, but since she’s mostly airheaded, it feels awkward when she tries to act like an older sister.

We head towards the forest area with Tile.
We take out the biggest rock and stand Tile in the center.
I hand Tile a bamboo stick to use as a measuring tool, and I stab a survival knife into the rock on the opposite side and carve around it.

As expected, it turns out to be a slightly distorted circle.
Since it’s just a simple compass, it’s natural that there would be some deviation while rotating.
Now we just have to dig the rock cleanly along the incision.

After finishing the spring and returning to our base, Dyne approaches me with great joy.

“Thank you, Yuta-chan.
It was so lovely.
When that place becomes a forest, it will be the perfect spot for a nap.”

… Is that the only reason? It’s true that having a spring in the forest is a good thing, and I might have eventually made one even if Dyne didn’t mention it.
But watching Dyne happily humming, I think to myself.
Oh, God.
Please give that airheaded spirit some divine punishment.

It’s midnight, and Bell and Rain still haven’t returned.
Sylphy is with them, and since she’s a spirit, she should be fine, but I can’t help worrying unnecessarily because of their appearance.

“Yuta-chan, are you still awake? I’ll wake you up when they come back, so try to get some sleep for a bit.”

“Umm, I tried to sleep, but I couldn’t.
I’ll just stay up and talk with you.”

“Yuta-chan is such a worrywart.
It can’t be helped, so I’ll be your conversation partner.”

“Haha, thanks.
That helps a lot.”

As we talk, we wait for Bell and Rain to return.
Dyne teaches me various things about the role of spirits and this world, which turns out to be surprisingly informative.
I also realize that this world has too many wars, which makes me afraid to go to the town.

I got caught up in the conversation and before I know it, it’s already morning.
Dyne’s story was unexpectedly interesting, especially the one about how she launched a Sea dragon that had taken over her favorite spot up into the sky.

Since then, a legend has emerged that the Sea dragon became a god by ascending to the heavens.
However, in reality, there’s no such thing as a Sea dragon becoming a god.
I’m quite curious about what happened to the Sea dragon that was launched into the sky.

I step outside to bask in the morning sun and stretch my body.
My butt hurts from sitting for a long time.
The rock bench is not suitable for sitting for an extended period.

After washing my entire body, I look up at the sky and see two dots approaching me.

“Hey, Dyne.
I can’t see clearly, but are those Bell and Rain flying over here?”

“Oh, yes.
That’s Bell-chan and Rain-chan.
They seem to be doing well, so don’t worry.”

“I see.”

I’m glad they returned safely.
Does carrying something really make them fly slower? Bell is like a whirlwind when she’s not carrying anything, but the dots approaching us are slowly getting closer.
It seems like it will take a bit more time.

“I’m home, Yuta.”

Sylphy is standing next to me before I even realize it.
She must have come back ahead of them.

“Oh, welcome back, Sylphy.
You look really tired.
Did something happen?”

“There were no major problems.
However, those two are really just children.
They continuously had me worried with their unexpected actions.
I would appreciate it if you stopped asking them to run errands for a while.”

To tire out the great spirit of wind, as one can see by looking at her… I’m scared to ask what happened.

“I see.
Thank you for your hard work, Sylphy.”

“You’re welcome.
They’re almost there.
Welcome them back with a smile.”

At Sylphy’s words, I look up at the sky again and the dots are now close enough to see their faces.
They look happy and energetic.

“Bell, Rain! Welcome back!”

I shout loudly, and Bell and Rain hear me and wave their hands as they fly towards me.

“I’m home!”

“Kyuu.”

I hugged Bell and Rain as they jumped into my arms and praised them.
“Well done, Bell.
You came back safely.
Rain, you did a great job too.”

“Yay, I did my best!”

“Kyuu.”

As they giggled in my arms, I felt relieved.
I should wait until they grow a little bigger before sending them on errands again… but how do spirits grow?

“Oh!” Bell suddenly exclaimed, floating in front of me with a small leaf package.
Uh oh, this seems serious.
I hope I´m not crying.
I need to accept it properly.

“Bell, Rain, great work on the important mission.
You two have accomplished a difficult task and returned safely.
I am proud of Bell and Rain.
You have done well.
The mission is now complete.
You can rest now.”

“Yay!”

“Kyuu kyuu.”

I hugged them again and praised them.
When I looked up, I noticed Nomos and Tile looking at us warmly.
I felt embarrassed by my overly proud parent behavior.
I greeted them politely, “Good morning, Nomos and Tile.
Bell and Rain have returned with seeds.
Let’s plant them in the field.”

“These are the seeds they brought back.
Do Nomos and Tile know what type of seeds they are?”

“Hmm, well done.
Although we are not very interested in food, these two are leaves, while these two are roots,” Nomos replied.

It seems like the earth spirits are not interested in plants as food.
They might have some knowledge about plants, but they are not interested in them as a food source.
That’s alright.
Let’s get planting! Long live vegetables!
